You can find a short list on werewolves.com giving a rundown of some of the classics from this decade, but The Comprehensive Werewolf Filmography list on Letterboxd has 40 films for the 1990s (so far). It also has mini-series, which I’m omitting from this post as it’s specifically about films.

I find it interesting to trace the themes through each decade. I think it’s possibly fair to say that while the ’90s were still going all in on the horror-comedy, things were a bit darker in this decade. Also, a bit more overt with the queer themes.

Feature Films Where Werewolves/Wolf Men Make Brief(ish) Appearances

• It (1990) dir. Tommy Lee Wallace
• Cast A Deadly Spell (1991) dir. Martin Campbell. A genre mash-up of hard boiled Noir and Fantasy, set in an alternative 1940s USA where magic is commonplace.
• The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) dir. Henry Selick
• Frankenstein and Me (1996) dir. Robert Tinnell – this one is for children.
• Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) dir. John R. Leonetti
• Halloweentown (1998) dir. Duwayne Dunham – this one is for children.

Horror-Comedies

• Mom (1990) dir. Patrick Rand
• Aquí huele a muerto… (¡Pues yo no he sido!) / It Smells Like Someone Died Here… But It Wasn’t Me! (1990) dir. Álvaro Sáenz de Heredia
• Monster Mash: The Movie (1995) dirs. Alec Sokolow, Joel Cohen
• Shopping for Fangs (1997) dirs. Justin Lin, Quentin Lee – this is a crime drama/thriller as well, but it’s also a comedy, so I’ve filed it here. Plus: lesbians. I’m side-eyeing it a bit as lesbians weren’t treated well in a lot of 1990s films… I’ll have to see it though! • The Creeps (1997) dir. Charles Band
• The Curse (1999) dir. Jacqueline Garry – a modern she-wolf horror-comedy.

Thrillers/Crime Drama Werewolf Films

• Час оборотня / The Werewolf Hour (1990) dir. Igor Shevchenko – Soviet Union/Russian werewolf made-for-TV film. This feels very allegorical to me, especially set against the backdrop of a crumbling USSR. Our werewolf is a journalist.
• Full Eclipse (1993) dir. Anthony Hickox – werewolves in the Los Angeles Police Department!
• Moonchild (1994) dir. Todd Sheets – a government agent is the werewolf in this, and it’s also a father/son drama.
• Sieben Monde/Night Time (1998) dir. Peter Fratzscher – I think this is missing from the Letterboxd list so I have commented to suggest it, but it’s on a list of the Best ’90s Werewolf Movies from Movie Web. It’s an early role for Christoph Walz, and a thriller in which a man investigating grisly murders realises the killer may be none other than himself – in wolf form – and one of the victims is his own mother.

Anthology Films Featuring Werewolves

• Twisted Tales (1994) dirs. Kevin J. Lindenmuth, Mick McCleery, Rita Klus. The werewolf segment is ‘Hungry… Like A Bat?’ in which a man has to come to terms with being part human, part vampire, and part werewolf.

Werewolf Films For Kids/Teens

• The Legend of Wolf Mountain (1992) dir. Craig Clyde – including this although I am not sure if it technically counts. It features a wolf that is really a North American Native man’s spirit, who can transform into a human being, played by Don Shanks (uncredited, a Native actor).
• Goosebumps: The Werewolf of Fever Swamp (1996) dir. William Fruet
• The Munsters’ Scary Little Christmas (1996) dir. Ian Emes
• The Werewolf Reborn! (1998) dir. Jeff Burr

Romance/Erotic Horror Werewolf Films

• Meridian (1990) dir. Charles Band – dark, erotic, warning for sexual assault.
• Mad at the Moon (1992) dir. Martin Donovan – romantic Western werewolf film.
• Wolf (1994) dir. Mike Nichols – starring Jack Nicholson & Michelle Pfeiffer.
• Wilderness (1996) dir. Ben Bolt – a psychological drama with romantic elements, exploring the loneliness of a woman who transforms into a wolf every full moon.
• The Strangers (1998) dirs. Sergei Ivanov, Yuri Ivanov – relationship drama with some erotica elements.
• The Wolves of Kromer (1998) dir. Will Gould – gay werewolf fantasy-action film. If you want lesbians, look under Horror-Comedies for the link to Shopping for Fangs.
• Cold Hearts (1999) dir. Robert A. Masciantonio – this is actually a vampire film but there is a werewolf character!

• Plenilunio / Fullmoon (1993) dir. Ricardo Islas – a Uruguayan film, edited and revamped after release and available here.
