INTERVIEW
What got you into horror to begin with – what’s your core Horror memory?
I’ve had a fascination with the supernatural since I was very young. A core memory is getting kicked out of my tent at a Girl Scout camping trip, because my ghost story was too scary. At twelve I became obsessed with Anne Rice and even met her on the Tale of the Body Thief tour. I still have my signed copy.
Do you have a favourite horror subgenre (or more than one) and if so, what is it? What/Who are your favourite books/films/podcasts/artists/creatives working in that subgenre?
Gothic horror is my preferred. I’ve never been a slasher girl though I can’t wait for Grace Reynold’s Neon Moon, honky tonk slasher.
Gothic horror though feeds my foggy moors and parasitic plant life soul.
What is the horror project of your heart – perhaps something you’ve already got out there, something you’re working on now, or something you’d like to do?
I’ve found my niche in Florida gothic, bringing the eerie and uncomfortable into the scope of the chromatic and bright light of the Sunshine State. That said, my husband is English and we have bounced between the US and UK for the last 27 years. Many of my stories are UK set, and I *may* be working on a new gothic horrormance set in an undisclosed UK city.
Which 5 horror books can you not stop thinking about, or have influenced you most in some way? (If not books, you can pick 5 films, 5 pieces of art, 5 songs… or mix & match!)
Interview With the Vampire,
The Strand,
Rebecca,
Dracula (1992 film) and book of course,
Midnight Mass as a show.
Honorable mention for the scariest movie of all time: Darby O’Gill and the Little People. I will never get over it.
If you had to describe the tones and themes of your own work in terms of movies, books, songs, or art, what would you choose and why?
For Bromeliad House, I compare it to the vibes of the 1998 screen adaptation of Great Expectations, mixed with The Hacienda and A House With Good Bones, with a soundtrack inclusive of a mix of Ethel Cain, The Last Dinner Party, and Zach Bryan, sampling The Cure in every mixed track.
Introduce us to something you’ve created, and pitch it to the audience!
Bromeliad House, once a sprawling heirloom estate on Florida’s haunted Treasure Coast, now a crumbling relic of a family worn it its barest threads. Within these walls, Delphine began seeing the ghosts of loved ones in mirrors and reflections before they died. A phenomenon known as a fetch. Releasing April 7 with Quill & Crow Publishing.
