As we’re currently in 2026 at the time of posting, I can only include upcoming films which are slated to release in 2027-2029. This post is going to be outdated next year! There aren’t as many werewolf films in this decade apparently, so perhaps we’re getting a new trend, or maybe Robert Eggers’ 2026 release will kick start a new appreciation for the monster.
This time I’ve added a “Werewolf Women” subgenre, as we’ve started to get more she-wolves. I think I’ll go back to do a post on she-wolves and female directors of werewolf films. I do think it’s interesting how many lesbian werewolves there are, but how few gay werewolves there are by comparison. Maybe it just lends itself to feminine rage? Sapphic constructions of monstrosity? Constructions of sapphism as monstrosity? Women as closer to nature and moon cycles, with PMS as an obvious allegory? Only another woman would see you at your most primal and savage and love you for who you are because she fundamentally gets it? All of the above? Answers on a postcard.
Again, this isn’t comprehensive, and doesn’t include short films or documentaries, but this is a list of werewolf films for the decade so far!
Films where Werewolves are Featured that Are not “Werewolf” Films
- The New Mutants (2020) dir. Josh Boone
- Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 2 (2020) dir. Paul Hoen. Teen romance/fantasy made-for-TV movie. The werewolves are not in the first one.
- Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 3 (2022) dir. Paul Hoen. Zombies, humans, and werewolves in High School.
- The Munsters (2022) dir. Rob Zombie. A spooky rom-com based on the kids’ show.
- Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022) dirs. Derek Drymon, Jennifer Kluska.
Werewolf Comedy Films
- Teddy (2020) dirs. Zoran Boukherma, Ludovic Boukherma. French coming-of-age comedy drama where a teen boy gets scratched and undergoes frightening changes.
- A Werewolf in England (2020) dir. Charlie Steeds. Low budget British horror-comedy set in 19thC England. You may recognise Steeds if you’re into indie films, as he’s another prolific UK-based indie filmmaker, but not yet as prolific as Andrew Jones.
- The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020) dir. Jim Cummings. Spoof police procedural in small town Utah. The humour didn’t always land for me, but I’m sure it’s somebody’s cup of tea!
- Werewolves Within (2021) dir. Josh Ruben. A forest ranger arrives in a small town battling a pipeline proposal, and carnage ensues.
- The Horrific Evil Monsters (2021) dir. Adam R. Steigert. Action Horror-Comedy from the director of FANG.
- Wolf Manor (2022) dir. Dominic Brunt. The cast and crew of a vampire film, on location at a creepy old manor, fall victim to the manor’s resident werewolf.
- Werewolf Santa (2023) dir. Airell Anthony Hayles. Santa gets bitten by a werewolf, and a YouTuber must save the day.
Werewolf Films for a Teen/Younger Audience
- Wolfwalkers (2020) dirs. Tomm Moore, Ross Stewart. Animation set in medieval Ireland, ecological family film.
- Teen Wolf: The Movie (2023) dir. Russell Mulcahy
Werewolf Women Films
- Bloodthirsty (2020) dir. Amelia Moses. I enjoy Moses’ low budget films. She does a lot with what she’s got, and they’re always queer. This one was a decent Canadian werewolf indie film with a lesbian singer protagonist.
- I Am Lisa (2020) dir. Patrick Rea. The victim of police brutality and left for dead, Lisa is bitten by a werewolf and gets revenge.
- Vikingulven/Viking Wolf (2021) dir. Stig Svendsen. A Norwegian teen girl witnesses a gruesome murder and starts starts having strange visions and bizarre desires.
- My Animal (2023) dir. Jacqueline Castel. Young lesbian love in a small Canadian town, where one of them is a werewolf. If you want to find a lesbian werewolf, head to Canada.
- Night Carnage (2025) dir. Thomas J. Churchill. Blogger/Playboy romance with werewolf action! The blogger is a she-wolf, but the playboy also has a secret of his own.
Relationship/Family-Centred Werewolf Films
- Blood Moon (2021) dir. Emma Tammi. From the director of The Wind and Five Nights at Freddy’s, a mother-and-son-on-the-run film. Similar vein to Outcast and Wolf Children.
- Wolf (2021) dir. Nathalie Biancheri. This is a drama that deals with lycanthropy as a mental illness, in which a man has delusions that he is a wolf in a human body. While in treatment for this delusion, he meets a fellow patient who believes she is a wildcat in human form. The two develop a friendship which grows into infatuation.
- Kommunioun/Wolfkin (2022) dir. Jacques Molitor. Belgian drama where a single mother is disturbed at her son’s aggressive behaviour, so she goes to visit his father’s family and discovers a terrible secret.
- The Beast Within (2024) dir. Alexander J. Farrell. Family-centred UK werewolf film where a young girl discovers her father’s secret. It’s mostly a film about domestic violence and abuse.
- Wolf Man (2025) dir. Leigh Whannell. A family are trapped in a farmhouse after an attack by an unseen animal, and the father begins to change.
Anthologies
- Night of the Werewolves (2024) dirs. Natasha Pascetta, Justin Sulham, Noboru Suzuki, Phil Pattison, Howie Askins, John Ferrer.
Crime Drama/Mystery Thriller Werewolf Films
- The Legend of Dog Lady Island (2020) dir. Michael James Alexander. The name implies that it’s another she-wolf movie, but the main thrust is a mystery with a male protagonist, so I’m putting it here!
- Lycaon: Terror in the Woods (2026) dir. Scott Hand. Mystery horror-thriller, low-budget, indie. Spotted on a streaming service, and that said 2026. Information is sparse on Letterboxd, there’s a bit more on IMDb.
Fantasy/Action Werewolf Films
- Werewolf by Night (2021) dir. Michael Giacchino. Monster hunters gather at the Bloodstone Temple after the death of their leader to hunt for an ancient relic.
- Operation Blood Hunt (2024) dir. Louis Mandylor. Action Adventure in which a group of military rejects are tasked with searching for Marines who went missing in 1944. Turns out, it’s werewolves.
- Werewolves (2024) dir. Steven C. Miller. Sci-Fi Action Horror, where a supermoon activated a dormant gene that turned humans into werewolves.
Gothic / Horror Werewolf Films
- The Cursed / Eight for Silver (2021) dir. Sean Ellis. In 19thC, a baron slaughters a Roma clan and sets off a curse. I’m not sure the film works the way it was supposed to if ‘don’t do genocide’ is the message…
- The Amityville Moon (2021) dir. Thomas J. Churchill. Religious cult horror (USA) werewolf film.
- Werewolf Castle (2021) dir. Charlie Steeds. Medieval-set werewolf horror.
- Werewolf Cabal (2021) dir. Chris Shane Sanders. Another rural cult film, again in rural USA.
- Blackout (2023) dir. Larry Fessenden. Small town alcoholic artist believes he’s a werewolf and withdraws deeper into isolation, but his flashes of memory of his grisly nighttime acts manifest themselves through his artwork.
- Dead Howling (2026) dir. John V. Soto. A werewolf hunts zombies after losing his family.
- Werwulf (2026) dir. Robert Eggers. Set in 13thC England, highly anticipated. We shall see!
