I’ve been doing the #100HorrorMoviesIn92Days challenge for a few years now, and really enjoying it. This challenge was started by gastrohorror aficionado Sarah Stubbs, and the rules are to watch 100 new-to-you feature films labelled as Horror on either Letterboxd or IMDb. Documentaries on Horror are also allowed, as are Horror anthology films. The challenge begins on 01 August and ends 31 Oct (Halloween).
I’ve discovered so many films as a result of this challenge, but I’m aware of watching quite a lot I don’t rate very highly or don’t really enjoy, just to get my count up. As a result of that, I’ve started being more intentional with my lists, and trying to save up films to watch for the challenge.
This year, I’m also going to make the challenge into a podcast season – S06 of Eldritch Girl. You can listen to the longer audio version of this post here, as my first episode of that brand new season.
Overall Best Films
Most Unexpected Find: Fangs (1981), an Egyptian remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but instead of rampaging queers in New England somewhere, it’s vampires in Egypt led by Count Dracula, and the film takes a bite out of Egyptian capitalism. The music is mostly the same, but the lyrics changed to reflect the plot changes, and obviously it’s in Arabic.
Funniest Horror Film: Boys From County Hell (2020) had me screaming with laughter every five minutes, so it takes the cake here. A very close second is the single line from KillerKiller delivered just as I was drinking a glass of water, and found I couldn’t swallow because I needed to laugh, and I couldn’t spit it out or I’d destroy my laptop, so I nearly drowned in my own living room instead.
All Time Favourite Comfort Film: The Torture Chamber of Dr Sadism (1967) has become my comfort film. I love absolutely everything about it, from the ridiculous plot to the wholly inappropriate 1960s lounge jazz soundtrack. I love that the two side characters I shipped got together at the end, and how utterly bonkers the castle situation is. I love Sir Christopher Lee attempting to bring gravitas to the role, and how fun it is in general. So many great moments.
Scariest Film: Terrified is an Argentinian film that really freaked me out the first time I watched it. It stood up to a second watch too, and it was one that made me want to sleep with the lights on.
Most Surreal Film: The Strange Color of My Body’s Tears is a Belgian film and I think is actually Surrealist? So I’m going with that one. I’ve got a list of the weirdest films I’ve seen below.

Top 10 Most Depressing/Upsetting Films
I have made poor choices for my emotional state while watching new-to-me films completely cold. Some of these were technically great films, but they depressed the fuck out of me. Some just really upset me. Some did both. Some of these are on the list for rape, graphic miscarriage/stillbirth, and/or child abuse including CSA; some are on the list for being the upper limit/exceeding my limit for body horror on screen, or for just being really gnarly in ways I can’t explain. Some also just made me very sad.

It’s not actually often that I watch films that really freak me out, but here’s a list of ones that made me really made me feel some affect of Horror. Some of these were the limit of my body horror tolerance, made me feel sick, did weird things with insects/parasites (absolutely the fuck not, thank you), or just… scared me in some way.
