The final 10 films! I have to admit, it was getting hard to find ones on my streaming services that I haven’t watched at this point, and ones I’m looking forward to are coming out later in the year, and other things aren’t streaming in the UK. But! I made it!

(91) The Power (2021) dir. Corinna Faith. I really liked this, it’s set in the rolling blackouts of the 1970s, and in a hospital in East London, where horrendous abuses of power are going on in the children’s ward. It’s a good use of the blackouts and the creepiness of an almost fully evacuated hospital. The power has multiple meanings, from the literal power that gets cut, to the Unions and class and racial struggles within the intersectional identities of the hospital hierarchy, to the ways the powerless take their power back.

TW for child abuse, and nobody believing it, including other women.

(92) Salem’s Lot (2024) dir. Gary Dauberman. This was fine, it was entertaining, and there were quite a few elements I enjoyed. I had no expectations going in, so safe to say they were all met… I’m not usually a fan of Stephen King adaptations, but I did enjoy It (Chapters One and Two, and the previous version of it), so I gave this a go and it was fine.

(93) Heart Eyes (2025) dir. Josh Ruben. I didn’t expect to like this, but I did enjoy it and it was pretty fun. I liked the premise much more than I thought I would, and the characters were fun, I liked their chemistry and their dynamic.

(94) Wolf Man (2025) dir. Leigh Whannell. Really enjoyed this take on the werewolf myth, and I really liked the way this story was centred on the family unit. I liked the contrast between the opening scene dynamics of father and son, and the way Blake treats his daughter when he becomes a father.

(95) The Blackening (2022) dir. Tim Story. A decent horror-comedy with a lot of meta stuff, and there were bits where I laughed out loud, and I’m glad I saved it for the challenge!

(96) Strange Frequencies Taiwan Killer Hospital (2024) dir. Kerwin Go. A Filipino horror set in Taiwan, which really didn’t work for me in terms of pacing and scares, and I also didn’t care very much about the characters and their dynamics, so this one is a miss. However, it was just as good as every other haunted hospital film I’ve seen, so I wasn’t disappointed by it.

(97) 粽邪2:馗降 / The Rope Curse 2 (2020) dir. Liao Shih-Han. I haven’t seen the first film in this franchise, but I didn’t need to. This stood alone pretty well. I enjoyed the story and the characters, and the concept. I think I would have been more invested if I had seen the first one, and then something that happened at the end might have had additional emotional impact, but again, I didn’t need that to enjoy it.

(98) 粽邪3:鬼門開 / The Rope Curse 3 (2023) dir. Liao Shih-Han. This one again could stand on its own, but I liked the continuation of characters from the 2nd film to link them, and I think I found this one the most moving, although I think I preferred the plot of the 2nd one.

(99) La marca del demonio / The Devil’s Mark (2020) dir. Diego Cohen. This is not just a Mexican possession film, it’s a Lovecraftian possession film, in which the Necronomicon plays a part, and it’s demon-on-demon action. I appreciated the dynamic between the sisters at the heart of the film, and the dynamic between Fr. Tomás and Karl. Easily one of the best films featuring the Necronomicon that I’ve seen.

(100) อนงค์ / My Boo (2024) dir. Khomkrit Treewimol. Horror-comedy romance, in which a guy falls for a ghost in a creepy old mansion he inherits from his grandfather. The ghosts in the house cannot reincarnate as nobody knew what happened to their remains, so it’s a kind of quest to do that for them, while also falling for the cute dead girl in the process. I really liked this one, it was a very fun one to end on. The twist at the end was one I didn’t see coming (but that could be interpreted another way too).
